Privacy
This notice explains what happens to your information when you use the Seisin application and this website. In short, the application stores your data on your own computer and this website does not track you. The detail below is there so that you do not have to take that on trust.
Who is responsible
Seisin is made and operated by Abdelrahman Sheibani, an individual based in Portugal, who is the data controller for the limited processing described in this notice. You can reach him at [email protected].
The Seisin application
Everything you put into the application, including applications, offers, interview
notes, resumes, cover letters, contacts and settings, is stored on your own device: on Windows under
AppData\Local\Seisin, on macOS under
~/Library/Application Support/Seisin, and on Linux under
~/.config/Seisin. There is no account and no sign-in. That
information is never transmitted to the controller or to anyone else, and it is
not processed by us in any way, because we never receive it.
The Network feature is the one place the application holds information about someone other than you: a name, role, company, and any notes you choose to add about people you have met in your job search. That information is stored on your device in exactly the same way as everything else described above, never transmitted anywhere. If you use this feature, please be thoughtful about what you record and how you use it.
Files you import are read on your own machine. That covers a CV brought in as a PDF or Word document, and a spreadsheet of past applications brought in as CSV or Excel. Nothing is uploaded in order to be read, and the analysis the application performs on a CV runs entirely on your device. The same is true in the other direction: exports, backups and calendar files are written straight to a location you choose.
An optional account with cloud synchronisation is planned for a future version. It will be optional. Using Seisin entirely locally will remain supported, nothing will be uploaded without your choosing it, and this notice will be updated before any such change takes effect.
When the application uses the internet
The application never transmits your applications, offers, interview notes, resumes or salary information. There are exactly three occasions on which it makes a network request, and none of them carries information about you.
- Update check. On launch, and whenever you select "Check for Updates" in Settings, the application asks the GitHub releases API whether a newer version exists. This is the only request the application makes without being asked. It can be switched off entirely in Settings, under "Check on Launch", in which case no request is made on startup.
- Job posting autofill. When, and only when, you paste a job advertisement URL and ask Seisin to fill in the details, it retrieves that public page in order to read the role and company from it.
- Exchange rates. When, and only when, you select "Refresh from ECB" in the Offers rate editor, it retrieves the European Central Bank's public daily reference rates.
As with any internet request, the party on the receiving end, meaning GitHub, the job advertisement's website, or the European Central Bank, will see your IP address and may record it in its own server logs under its own privacy policy. We do not receive that information. All three requests are avoidable: the launch check can be disabled in Settings, job details can be entered by hand, and exchange rates can be edited manually.
The browser extension (coming soon)
A free Seisin extension for Chrome, Edge and Firefox is coming with the next version of the application. This section sets out how it handles data, so it is in place before the extension appears in the browser stores.
The extension saves a job posting from the page you are viewing into the application on your computer. To show its save button on job postings by itself, it checks each page you open for the job details the page publishes, inside your browser. That check sends nothing anywhere and keeps no record of the pages you visit. Only when you save a job does it read the posting in front of you (the role, company, location, description and similar details) and send it to the Seisin application running on the same computer, at the local address 127.0.0.1, and nowhere else. If the application is not running, a job you choose to save waits in the extension's own storage in your browser until it is. It makes no requests to us or to anyone else and contains no analytics. You can hide the save button on any site from the extension itself.
To connect, the extension asks the application and you approve it in the application's own window, or you type a one-time code shown in Settings. The connection is a random key stored in the extension and, in scrambled (hashed) form, on your device. You can disconnect a browser at any time in Settings, under Browser Extension, and removing the extension deletes its key.
From that version, the application can also keep running in the background when its window is closed, and open when you sign in to your computer, so the extension can save jobs at any time. You choose this the first time you open it and can change it in Settings, under Startup. Running in the background sends nothing anywhere.
This website
This website is a set of static pages. It sets no cookies, loads no third-party fonts or advertising, contains no forms, and does not track you across other sites.
To understand which pages are read and which links people arrive from, the site uses Cloudflare Web Analytics, a cookieless measurement service. A small script from Cloudflare records each page view: the page address, the referring site, and broad device, browser and country information. It does not use cookies or local storage, does not build a profile of you, and does not follow you from site to site. We only ever see the totals, never an individual visit.
The site is hosted on Cloudflare Pages. Cloudflare acts as a processor on our behalf and, in the ordinary course of serving and protecting the site, processes technical connection data including IP addresses. Cloudflare is established in the United States, so this processing may involve a transfer of personal data outside the European Economic Area, carried out under the safeguards Cloudflare provides for such transfers, including the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses. Cloudflare's own privacy documentation describes its retention of that data; we do not access, query or retain those logs ourselves.
Legal basis and retention
The only processing carried out for us is the technical connection data and the cookieless page-view measurement described above, and our legal basis for both is our legitimate interest, under Article 6(1)(f) of the GDPR, in serving the website securely, keeping it available, and understanding in aggregate how people find it. We hold no database of users, we keep no mailing list, and we retain no personal data of our own, so there is nothing for us to delete on a schedule. If you write to the support address, we keep that correspondence only for as long as it takes to deal with your message.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the right to access the personal data held about you, to have it corrected or erased, to restrict or object to its processing, and to data portability. Because the application keeps your data on your own device, and because this site only counts page views in aggregate, there is in practice almost nothing for us to act on: your data is already in your possession, and you can export, back up or delete it from within the application at any time. You may nonetheless exercise these rights in relation to any correspondence you have sent us, or any data processed on our behalf by our host, by writing to the address below.
You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority. In Portugal this is the Comissão Nacional de Proteção de Dados (CNPD). If you are in another country of the European Economic Area or in the United Kingdom, you may complain to your own national authority instead.
We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it for advertising or any other commercial purpose. We have never done so and there is no mechanism in Seisin by which we could.
Changes to this notice
If what Seisin does with data changes, this page will be updated before the change reaches you, and the date at the top will be revised. Material changes, in particular the introduction of optional accounts and cloud synchronisation, will be described here in plain terms rather than absorbed quietly into the text.
Contact
For any question about this notice, or to exercise any of the rights described in it, write to [email protected]. You may also open an issue on GitHub, though please use email for anything concerning your personal data.
